Two teenagers will make tennis history at the 2021 US Open. One turned 19 this week, the other is even two months younger, Leylah Fernandez from Canada and the still 18-year-old British Emma Raducanu, also born in Canada. Her parents, a Romanian and a Chinese, emigrated to England when she was two years old.

Fernandez knocks out four top players in a row

Leylah Fernandez, still No. 73 in the WTA rankings before the tournament started, beat four absolute top players in a row: in round three (R32) the defending champion and four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka in three sets, then the now again formidable three-time Grand Slam winner Angelique Kerber also in three sets, in the quarter-finals the bronze medallist from Tokyo Elina Svitolina in three and tonight the No. 2 of the world Aryna Sabalenka again in three sets.

„That’s years, years, years of hard work and of tears and blood and everything. I really wanted to get to the final,“ Fernandez said after her 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-4 win over Sabalenka. „I’m happy to be in the final.“

Raducanu moves into women’s final without losing a set

Afterwards, Emma Raducanu, still 18, will also enter the women’s final of the tournament with the longest tradition in the world after Wimbledon. Raducanu was No. 150 in the WTA rankings and was therefore not admitted to the 128-player main draw. She first had to play the qualifying pre-tournament to get into the main tournament. In the qualifier, she won three times in 2:0 sets. This meant that she was eligible to play in the actual tournament at the US Open. And there the English super talent continued in exactly the same way. Six times she won 2:0 here, too, and in a total of nine matches in New York she did not drop a single set. This has never happened before in the history of tennis.

In the quarter-finals, Raducanu swept Barty defeater Shelby Rogers off the court 6-2, 6-1. Wimbledon winner Ashleigh Barty was considered the big tournament favourite before the start of the tournament, but was then surprisingly eliminated by the very strong playing Rogers. In the semi-finals, Raducanu then beat Olympic champion Belinda Bencic 6:3, 6:4 and tonight in the semi-finals the strong Greek Maria Sakkari, who is now one of the eight best in the world, 6:1, 6:4.

„I just took care of every day,“ Raducanu said. „And before you know it, three weeks later I’m in the final and I can’t believe it.“ Raducanu first attracted attention two months ago at Wimbledon when she went straight to the last 16 in her first appearance at a Grand Slam tournament.

Two exceptional players and two upcoming champions

Both Fernandez and Raducanu, at 1.68 m and 1.75 m respectively, are not outstandingly tall for tennis players, they are not very muscular either, they play not so much with enormous strength as with excellent technique. Almost everything about them seems somehow easy, sometimes even almost effortless. And both of them are characterised by an enormous joy of playing, carefreeness and nerves of steel. Simply put, they can play damn good tennis, better than almost anyone else. They are likely to become two great champions. One as early as tomorrow.

Fernandez and Raducanu are the first two teenagers to reach the final of the US Open since 1999, when the two great champions Martina Hingis and Serena Williams played the women’s final.

First qualifier in a Grand Slam final in the history of tennis

Yet Emma Raducanu has already achieved something unique: she is the first player in history (Wimbledon has been played since 1877, for women since 1884 and the American Championships since 1881, for women since 1887) to reach a Grand Slam final as a qualifier, i.e. to win nine matches in a row at a tournament.

Zwei Teenager im Finale der US Open

Zwei Teenager schreiben bei den US Open 2021 Tennis-Geschichte. Die eine ist diese Woche 19 Jahre alt geworden, die andere ist noch zwei Monate jünger, Leylah Fernandez aus Kanada und die noch 18-jährige Britin Emma Raducanu, ebenfalls in Kanada geboren. Ihre Eltern, ein Rumäne und eine Chinesin, wanderten nach England aus, als sie zwei Jahre alt war. Dort wuchs sie dann auf.

Fernandez schaltet vier Spitzenspielerinnen nacheinander aus

Leylah Fernandez, vor Turnierbeginn noch die Nr. 73 im WTA-Ranking, schlägt nacheinander vier absolute Top-Spielerinnen: in Runde drei (R32) die Titelverteidigerin und vierfache Grand Slam-Siegerin Naomi Osaka in drei Sätzen, dann die inzwischen wieder bärenstarke dreifache Grand Slam-Siegerin Angelique Kerber ebenfalls in drei Sätzen, im Viertelfinale die Bronzemedaillengewinnerin von Tokio Elina Svitolina in drei und heute Nacht die Nr. 2 der Welt Aryna Sabalenka wiederum in drei Sätzen.

„Das sind Jahre, Jahre, Jahre harter Arbeit und an Tränen und Blut und allem. Ich wollte wirklich ins Finale kommen“, sagte Fernandez nach ihrem 7:6 (7:3), 4:6, 6:4 Sieg über Sabalenka. „Ich bin froh, dass ich im Finale bin.“

Raducanu zieht ohne Satzverlust ins Damenendspiel ein

Anschließend zieht auch die noch 18-jährige Emma Raducanu ins Damenendspiel des nach Wimbledon traditionsreichsten Turnier der Welt ein. Raducanu war bisher die Nr. 150 im WTA-Ranking und wurde daher gar nicht gleich zum 128er Hauptfeld zugelassen. Sie musste erst das Qualifikations-Vorturnier bestreiten, um ins Hauptturnier zu kommen. In der Quali siegte sie dreimal in 2:0 Sätzen. Damit war sie bei den US Open im eigentlichen Turnier spielberechtigt.

Und dort machte das englische Supertalent genau so weiter. Sechsmal gewann sie auch hier 2:0, gab jetzt in insgesamt neun Matches in New York keinen einzigen Satz ab. So etwas gab es in der gesamten Tennisgeschichte noch niemals. Im Viertelfinale fegte Raducanu die Barty-Bezwingerin Shelby Rogers mit 6:2, 6:1 vom Platz. Die Wimbledon-Siegerin Ashleigh Barty galt vor Turnierbeginn als die große Turnierfavoritin, schied dann aber überraschend gegen die sehr stark spielende Rogers aus. Im Halbfinale schlug Raducanu dann die Olympia-Siegerin Belinda Bencic 6:3, 6:4 und heute Nacht im Halbfinale die starke Griechin Maria Sakkari, die inzwischen zu den acht Besten der Welt gehört, mit 6:1, 6:4.

„Ich habe mich einfach um jeden Tag gekümmert“, sagte Raducanu. „Und ehe man sich versieht, stehe ich drei Wochen später im Finale und ich kann es gar nicht glauben.“ Raducanu hatte vor zwei Monaten in Wimbledon das erste Mal auf sich aufmerksam gemacht, als sie in ihrem allerersten Auftritt bei einem Grand Slam-Turnier direkt ins Achtelfinale eingezogen war.

Zwei Ausnahmespielerinnen und zwei kommende Champions

Beide, sowohl Fernandez als auch Raducanu, sind mit 1,68 m und 1,75 m für Tennisspielerinnen nicht überragend groß gewachsen, sie sind auch nicht sehr muskulös, spielen weniger mit enormer Kraft, als vielmehr mit exzellenter Technik. Bei ihnen wirkt fast alles irgendwie leicht, teilweise sogar fast mühelos. Und beide zeichnet einer enorme Spielfreude, Unbekümmertheit und Nervenstärke aus. Die Zwei können – schlicht gesprochen – einfach verdammt gut Tennis spielen, besser als fast alle anderen. Das dürften zwei kommende ganz große Champions werden. Die eine schon morgen.

Mit Fernandez und Raducanu stehen zugleich zum ersten Mal seit 1999 – damals bestritten die zwei großen Champions Martina Hingis und Serena Williams das Damenendspielt – wieder zwei Teenager im Finale der US Open.

Erste Qualifikantin in einem Grand Slam-Finale in der Geschichte des Tennissports

Dabei hat Emma Raducanu schon jetzt etwas Einzigartiges erreicht: Sie ist die erste Spielerin in der Geschichte (Wimbledon wird seit 1877 ausgetragen, seit 1884 für Damen und die amerikanischen Meisterschaften seit 1881, für Damen seit 1887), die als Qualifikantin ein Grand-Slam-Finale erreicht hat, die also bei einem Turnier neun Matches in Folge gewinnen konnte.
