World number one Novak Djokovic, who has won three of the four Grand Slam tournaments this year but failed to compete in four of the six Masters 1000 events, has now also cancelled the seventh C tournament of the year at Indian Wells, which starts next week.

Djokovic cancels Masters 1000 tournament for fifth time this year

The seventh Masters 1000 event of the year will be without world No 1 Novak Djokovic and the injured Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Roger Federer. The hard-court tournament in Indian Wells, California, has been postponed from its traditional March date to 07-17 October, while the C tournament in Shanghai, China, normally held in early October, has been cancelled completely because of the pandemic. With Djokovic, the fourth Grand Slam champion after Federer, Nadal and Thiem is now also missing in Indian Wells.

Djokovic’s cancellation was announced by tournament director Tommy Haas on Wednesday. The Djoker has already won the tournament in Indian Wells five times, most recently in 2016. On Twitter, he wrote at 20:44 (CET) on Wednesday night: „I’m sorry I won’t see my fans in Indian Wells and play in the desert, my favourite place. I hope to see you next year!“

This is Djokovic’s fifth cancellation this year from seven Masters 1000 events. The Serb also did not compete in Miami, Madrid, Toronto (Canadian Open) and Cincinnati. At the age of 34, the 36-time Masters 1000 champion has reached a stage in his career where he is almost exclusively concerned with the really big tournaments, the majors, especially the four Grand Slam events (A) and the Olympic Games (B), possibly the ATP Finals (B) in November. The Serb won the first three of these six major tournaments in 2021, but then most recently lost both the semi-finals and the bronze medal match at the Olympics and then the final of the US Open.

Djokovic’s big goal this year was, of course, the Golden Slam, to win all four Grand Slam tournaments in one calendar year plus the Olympic gold medal in singles, something no player has ever achieved in men’s tennis. With that, Nole would have written tennis history. But at the very least, after his victories in Melbourne, Paris and Wimbledon, he wanted to become the first player since Rod Laver in 1969 to achieve the Grand Slam, to win all four A tournaments in one season.

But in the final of the US Open against Daniil Medvedev, the Serb was not able to cope with the enormous psychological pressure and could not stand up to the brilliantly playing Russian. After this defeat, it will not be easy for the Djoker to motivate himself again. And he has already won so many C tournaments – 36, together with Nadal more than anyone else – that these events should no longer interest him so much. With the younger players, of course, it’s a very different story. Many of them will be eager for the penultimate Masters 1000 of the year.

Djokovic sagt auch Indian Wells ab

Der Weltranglistenerste Novak Djokovic, der dieses Jahr drei der vier Grand Slam-Turniere für sich entscheiden konnte, aber bei vier der sechs Masters 1000-Events nicht antrat, sagte nun auch beim nächste Woche beginnenden siebten C-Turnier des Jahres in Indian Wells ab.

Das siebte Masters 1000-Event des Jahres wird ohne die Nr. 1 der Welt, Novak Djokovic, und ohne die verletzten Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem und Roger Federer stattfinden. Das Hartplatzturnier in Indian Wells, Kalifornien, wurde von seinem traditionellen Termin im März auf den 07. bis 17. Oktober verschoben, während das C-Turnier in Shanghai, China, das normalerweise Anfang Oktober ausgetragen wird, wegen der Pandemie komplett gestrichen wurde. Mit Djokovic fehlt nun in Indian Wells nach Federer, Nadal und Thiem also auch der vierte Grand Slam-Champion.

Djokovics Absage gab Turnierdirektor Tommy Haas am Mittwoch bekannt. Der Djoker hat das Turnier in Indian Wells bereits fünfmal gewonnen, zuletzt 2016. Auf Twitter schreibt er am Mittwochabend um 20:44 Uhr (MEZ): „Es tut mir leid, dass ich meine Fans in Indian Wells nicht sehen und in der Wüste spielen werde, meinem Lieblingsort. Ich hoffe, wir sehen uns nächstes Jahr!“

Dies ist bereits die fünfte Absage von Djokovic dieses Jahr bei sieben Masters 1000-Events. Auch in Miami, Madrid, Toronto (Canadian Open) und Cincinnati war der Serbe nicht angetreten. Der 36-fache Masters 1000-Champion ist mit nun 34 Jahren in einer Phase seiner Karriere angelangt, in dem es ihm wohl fast nur noch um die ganz großen Turniere, die Majors geht, insbesondere die vier Grand Slam-Events (A) und die olympischen Spiele (B), eventuell noch die ATP Finals (B) im November. Die ersten drei dieser sechs größten Turniere 2021 konnte der Serbe für sich entscheiden, verlor dann aber zuletzt bei Olympia sowohl das Halbfinale als auch das Spiel um die Bronzemedaille und dann das Finale der US Open.

Das große Ziel von Djokovic war dieses Jahr natürlich der Golden Slam, alle vier Grand Slam-Turniere in einem Kalenderjahr zu gewinnen plus die olympische Goldmedaille im Einzel, was bei den Herren noch niemals einem Spieler gelang. Damit hätte Nole Tennisgeschichte geschrieben. Mindestens aber wollte er nach seinen Siegen in Melbourne, Paris und Wimbledon als erster Spieler seit Rod Laver 1969 den Grand Slam schaffen, alle vier A-Turniere in einer Saison gewinnen.

Doch im Finale der US Open gegen Daniil Medvedev brach der Serbe unter dem enormen psychischen Druck zusammen und war dem glänzend aufspielenden Russen nicht gewachsen. Nach dieser Niederlage dürfte es nicht einfach werden für den Djoker, sich neu zu motivieren. Und C-Turniere hat er so viele schon gewonnen – 36, zusammen mit Nadal mehr als jeder andere -, dass diese Events ihn nicht mehr so sehr interessieren dürften. Bei den jüngeren Spielern sieht das naturgemäß ganz anders aus. Hier dürften etliche heiß sein auf das vorletzte Masters 1000 des Jahres.
