With his tournament win in Toronto, Daniil Medvedev has moved back to second place in the JFB 52 Week Tennis World Ranking. Alexander Zverev had overtaken Medvedev a fortnight ago with his victory at the Olympic Games. This was Medvedev’s fifth tournament win in the last 52 weeks in singles plus the victory with Russia in the ATP Cup and his fourth career Masters 1000 event (C) title.
In the final in Toronto, Canada, Daniil Medvedev beat Reilly Opelka of the USA 6-4, 6-3 in 85 minutes. Earlier, he had defeated John Isner in the semi-finals outright 6-2, 6-2 and Hubert Hurkacz in the quarter-finals 2-6, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5) in a tight match. Opelka played an excellent tournament, beating Nick Kyrgios, Grigor Dimitrov, Lloyd Harris, Robert Bautista Agut and then surprisingly Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-finals 6-7, 7-6, 6-4.
Medvedev overtakes Alexander Zverev, the Tokyo Olympic champion, again with his win in Toronto (40 points). Opelka rises from 49 to 26 with the 24 points for a place in the final, while the second semi-finalist (14 points) John Isner rises from 48 to 32. With Opelka (26), Korda (27) and Tiefoe (28), there are now three US players in the top 30 and six US boys in the top 50, though still none in the top 25.
